UK Number Plate Law Explained

UK Number Plate Law Explained

UK number plate law is precise and non-negotiable. Every registration plate must follow fixed rules covering font, spacing, materials, reflectivity and markings to ensure it can be read instantly and accurately.

This page explains exactly what those rules are, what makes a plate legal, where most plates fail, and how to avoid fines or MOT issues.

What Makes a Number Plate Legal in the UK?

UK number plates must comply with the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations and meet the current BS AU 145e standard.

These rules exist to ensure every registration is clear, consistent and readable by both people and systems such as ANPR.

  • Correct reflective materials
  • Legal font and character dimensions
  • Fixed spacing and group spacing
  • Approved colour formats
  • Permanent supplier and standard markings

For a practical breakdown, see our road legal number plates guide.

UK Number Plate Rules

Materials & British Standard

All plates must be made from reflective material and meet BS AU 145e, which defines durability, visibility and resistance to wear.

Legal Font

UK plates must use the Charles Wright typeface. Characters cannot be altered, stylised or distorted in any way.

Raised styles such as 3D gel plates and 4D acrylic plates can still be compliant when the character shape and proportions remain correct.

Character Spacing

Spacing must match the format recorded on the vehicle’s registration documents.

Correct: AB12 CDE
Incorrect: AB 12CDE, AB12CDE, A B12CDE

Incorrect spacing can result in fines, MOT failure or registration withdrawal.

Colour & Reflectivity

Plates must follow a fixed colour format:

  • White reflective front plate
  • Yellow reflective rear plate
  • Black characters only

Tinted, smoked or patterned finishes reduce visibility and are not road legal.

Mandatory Plate Markings

Every legal plate must display:

  • Supplier name
  • Supplier postcode
  • British Standard code (BS AU 145e)

These markings confirm the plate is traceable and legally produced.

Flags, Identifiers & Optional Features

Approved national identifiers can be displayed on the left side of the plate.

  • Union Jack
  • St George Cross
  • Scottish Saltire
  • Welsh Dragon
  • UK identifier

Vehicles driven abroad must display UK rather than GB.

Electric vehicles may optionally display a green EV flash.

See short number plates and number plate sizes.

Are hex number plates legal?

They can be, provided the registration remains correctly spaced and fully readable.

View hex plates, 7 digit, 6 digit and 5 digit options.

Do I need documents to order number plates?

Yes. Legal suppliers must verify identity and entitlement before producing plates.

See documents required.

Will spacing be corrected automatically?

Yes. Proper manufacture applies correct spacing before production regardless of input.

Why Compliance Matters

Number plates are a legal identifier, not a styling accessory.

Incorrect plates can lead to:

  • Police fines
  • MOT failure
  • Vehicle being stopped or flagged
  • Registration withdrawal

Getting it right the first time avoids unnecessary cost and risk.
