Number Plate Fitting Guide

Number Plate Fitting Guide UK

Fitting your number plates properly matters just as much as ordering them properly. A clean fit improves the final look of the vehicle, prevents damage to the plate and ensures everything sits straight, secure and fully road legal.

As a DVLA-registered supplier, MUZZPLATES manufactures every plate to meet UK legal standards. This guide shows you how to fit them correctly so the finished result looks right and stays compliant.

Before You Start

Before fitting your new number plates, make sure they meet UK requirements by following our road legal number plates guide.

You must also ensure you have the correct plate for each end of the vehicle:

  • White plate for the front
  • Yellow plate for the rear

Check that the mounting area is clean, dry and free from dirt, old adhesive or debris before fitting begins.

Removing Existing Number Plates

Check how your current plates are attached before starting. Most are fixed using screws, adhesive pads, or both.

  • If screwed on, remove the screws carefully and support the plate as the final fixing comes out
  • If fitted with pads, ease the plate away slowly to avoid damaging the bodywork
  • Remove any leftover adhesive, dirt or residue before fitting the new plates

A clean surface ensures the new plate sits correctly and avoids alignment issues.

Preparing the Mounting Area

Proper preparation makes fitting easier and gives a cleaner final result.

  • Clean the area thoroughly where the old plate was mounted
  • Remove any remaining adhesive pads or foam residue
  • Wipe the surface so it is fully clean, dry and ready

If adhesive is being used, preparation is critical. Dirt, grease or residue will reduce bond strength and affect how straight the plate sits.

Fitting Number Plates with Screws

If fitting your plates with screws, work carefully to avoid cracking or stressing the plate.

  • Use the old plate as a guide if the fixing holes already match
  • If drilling is required, mark positions carefully and drill slowly
  • Use light pressure and let the drill do the work
  • Do not overtighten screws, as this can damage the plate
  • Check the plate is level before fully securing it

Raised styles such as 4D acrylic plates require extra care to avoid damaging characters during fitting.

Important: Never drill through raised gel or acrylic characters. If the fixing point clashes with the layout, adjust the hole position or use adhesive pads instead.

Fitting Number Plates with Sticky Pads

Sticky pads provide the cleanest finish, removing visible screw heads and giving a more premium look.

  • Apply pads evenly across the full back of the plate
  • Do not group pads in one area
  • Only remove backing when ready to position the plate
  • Align carefully before pressing into place
  • Apply firm, even pressure across the plate once positioned

Sticky pads work best on flat, clean surfaces. Curved or textured areas may require screws for a more secure fit.

Smaller formats such as short number plates often benefit most from adhesive fitting due to reduced mounting space.

Getting the Best Fit

A good fit is not just about keeping the plate attached. It is about how the finished result looks on the vehicle.

  • Check the plate is straight before final fixing
  • Make sure spacing around the plate looks even
  • Do not trap dirt or debris behind the plate
  • Avoid forcing the plate onto uneven mounting points

Small fitting mistakes are immediately visible, especially on clean or premium vehicles.

Common Fitting Mistakes to Avoid

  • Fitting the white plate to the rear or the yellow plate to the front
  • Overtightening screws and cracking the plate
  • Mounting the plate off-centre or unevenly
  • Applying adhesive pads to dirty or wet surfaces
  • Rushing alignment before fixing the plate in place

Taking a few extra minutes at the start usually results in a much cleaner finish.

Build Your Plates Properly

If your current plates are faded, damaged or no longer match the standard of the vehicle, replacing them is the quickest way to improve the overall look.

Use the plate builder to configure a fully road-legal set with the correct spacing, materials and layout applied automatically.

Fit them properly. Keep them straight. Finish the car properly.

A properly fitted plate is the final detail that makes the whole vehicle look right. If the plate is wrong, everything around it feels off.
